Mr. Suave's 3rd Annual Christmas Modcast Invitational

Ho, ho, ho, kiddies! It's time for another installment of the now annual Christmas Modcast invitational. That's right, as with all my VIP soirees this one is by invite only. I sent out a limited number of invites and moddoms publicity whores gobbled 'em right up. So, this year, you're going to be treated to a merry mix of seasonal sounds from all manner of podcasters, bloggers and musicians.

You'll hear from the kingpin of mod opinion-makers, Warren Peace of We Are The Mods, who's contribution proves that all a good fade takes is a steadily fiddled knob. And from the long reigning queen of mod podcasting, the one and only Penny Lane from Punks & Parkas. Also on board is the prince of power pop promotion, The Ice Cream Man; mod music maven, Modification's Melvyn Fickling, Mr. style and sophistication himself, soul dj Parka Pat; the mod world's favorite guest host, Ken from The Shingles, plus season's greetings from Paradise, The Idle Gossip, RAF, and The Inciters.

Finally, rounding out the show is a really fantastic spoken word essay from Mary Queen of Cosmos. Not to be missed. Trust me.

Modcast #315: Fully Loaded!

Here in Seattle the days are short, sun sets about 4:30pm. To add woe to that misery it's cold out there these days, sub freezing with black ice everywhere. As per my particular vices it's usually alcohol that warms me up, and nothing does better on a freezing day than some steaming hot alcohol enhanced with a few extras. Add to that a mercurial mix of hot music, and pretty soon you hardly know it's dark and cold. So, mix up something steamy and I'll serve up some songs to help you through the winter.

Orchard Boulevardier

v8 ounces apple cider
v4 ounces rye whiskey
v2 ounce Campari
v2 ounce sweet vermouth
vGarnish: 2 orange twists
Stir all ingredients in a medium saucepan over medium heat until hot. Do not bring to a boil. Serve in a mug. Makes 2 cocktails.

Modcast #314: Cleaning Out The Garage

This week I'm giving you all the garage rock you can stand, from some sixties originals to some up and coming contemporary bands. After the original garage rock scene of the sixties passed away, it was a decade or so before it really sprang back to life. The punk rock scene of the late seventies fragmented into a number of different sounds, one of which was largely influenced by loud, raw, R&B of sixties bands like The Standells, The Chocolate Watchband, and The Count Five. They mixed the punk of the sixties with the punk of the seventies and incorporated the blues influences of the early Stones, Them and Yardbirds to create a distinct sound. Since then bands have built on those fuzzed out, guitar driven buzzsaw sounds incorporating elements of soul and modern alternative rock to keep the garage sound fresh but still recognizable.

Modcast #313: Acid Jazzin'

No doubt one of the biggest parts of mod music for the last 30 or so years has been acid jazz. What is acid jazz? Well broadly speaking I would describe it as a combination of jazz, soul, funk, bebop and sometimes hip hop. Sometimes its all of those rolled into one big fatty of a track. Other times its just one or two of those mixed together for a quick, smooth hit. Acid jazz is a big canvas, and as you'll see on this week's modcast I'm painting with bold broad strokes, like Van Gogh or Cezanne. For me acid jazz is pretty big tent and you can cram a lot under a big tent.

Modcast #310: The Misters Have It

You can blame this modcast on honorary producer Mary Queen of Cosmos who was the inspiration for this week's show -- as she often has been in the past as well. Anyhow she recently sent me Otis Redding's Mr. Pitiful which Redding wrote and recorded in the Stax studios in 1964and then released on his 1965 album The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads. But I digress. Ms. Mary challenged me to come up with a playlist to go with the song, and that's how we all endup here listening to some really kick ass music. Mary says a Mr. Pitiful deserves a Mrs. Fabulous, so she's provided us with an excellent cocktail recipe that you'll want to take to heart ... or liver, as the case may be.

Modcast #306: The Big Skacast!

Welcome to Mr. Suave's Ska Ska World. That's right, this week's show is crammed full of ska, from original rocksteady to two-tone and everything in between.

Ska has been a mainstay of most mods musical catalog dating all they way back to the '60s when original Jamaican ska and rocksteady became a big part of the mods' dancehall scene. Later mods mixed ska and soul, and then ska with punk and power pop which was really what came together in the two-tone scene of the late '70s and early '80s. Since then there have been several ska revivals, some more mainstream and poppy, and others harder with a punk edge. But through it all, ska has always been there for us in one style or form or another.

From The Vaults: Mod Essentials: In The Beginning

Once more into the vault my friends, once more into the vault. Step back in time, to a time when the modcast was young and fresh. Take a giant step outside your current listening constraints and journey with me back to a not so distant past, all the way back to 2008. I've opened up the vaults and dusted off a classic modcast that I think you'll enjoy. Again.

Listen Now
Download

Recently a friend --we'll call him Minnesota Mark -- asked me what mod is. More than that, he asked if I could put together a short playlist of the best mod songs. And you know, I was blown away by how difficult a task that turned out to be. I found that you can't narrow down to a dozen or so the most quintessential mod songs. Not to mention it's a totally subjective thing. What I think of as quintessential mod songs will be much different than another mod's picks. And what is quintessential anyhow? Again it's pretty subjective. I think I would define the quintessential mod songs as the songs that made me a mod early on -- mostly these were the songs that I simply loved that were already considered mod songs. As I thought about it though, I realized that quintessential mod songs are also those that when I hear them they make me think mod, they make me think of the mod sound and what it means to be a mod. They need not be original quote unquote mod songs.

Anyhow, Minnesota Mark's question got me to thinking: I bet there are a lot of people who'd be interested in hearing what I think are the most quintessential mod songs. At least I hope so. So, I'm going to do a periodic series of modcasts picking the dozen or so most essential mod sounds -- each time corresponding with a specific genre unique to mods, or a specific mod era. For this modcast I'm starting where you should start, at the beginning, in the sixties. Thank you to Mark for asking the question of what a mod is and what mod music sounds like and getting this ball rolling. For the early mods it really all started rolling with the soul sound. I could go back to the jazz roots of mod -- the modernists, but this modcast is only supposed be a thirty minute affair and we're already going to blow that out of the water. So, let's jump up to the modernists' next gen children; the first 'mods' as it were and their love affair with all things soulful. all things bluesy, all things dancable. This podcast just barely skims the surface of what the sixties mod sound was like, but at least it's a start.

J.J. Jackson -- But Its Alright
The Miracles -- Tears of a Clown
Edwin Starr -- 25 Miles
Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames -- Money (That's What I Want)
The Who -- I Can't Explain
The Creation -- Biff Bang Pow
Small Faces -- Wham Bam Thank You M'am
The Kinks -- Set Me Free
The Monkees -- I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone
The Zombies -- She's Not There
The Easybeats -- Friday on my Mind
Strawberry Alarm Clock -- Incense & Peppermints

So, what are your essential sixties mod songs? I'm dying to find out from people what they see as the quintessential mod sound. E-mail me at rob@mistersuave.com and let me know.

Modcast #304: '79 Hell Of A Lot More Than Just A Mod Revival

In 1979 there was a whole hell of a lot more going on than just the mod revival. You all know the mod revival inside and out I'm sure. Trom The Jam to the Purple Hearts, the Small Hours, The Aces, to Mods Mayday '79, and of course the release of Quadrophenia. All good stuff. And all been done to death. Heck, I did a big mod revival show a few years ago as part of my Mod Essentials series. It's a good show. As I said, a whole hell of lot of other things were happening in music. Like 1966 and 1994, 1979 was just one of those iconic watershed music years. So on this week's modcast I'm going to explore some of the other things happening at the same time the mod revival was in full bloom.

Modcast #303: How Are The Acoustics In Here?

This week on the modcast it's all acoustic tracks -- raw, stripped down, just the bare bones. I love how acoustic versions of songs can so drastically change a song. Sometimes that stripped down, raw sort of thing is just more pure. Sometimes it makes the song heavier, sometimes lighter and softer. Either way it really does give you something fresh and new. The way so many albums are overproduced these days, for me it's a real treat when an artist does the acoustic thing. It's one reason that MTV's Unplugged series was so incredibly popular. I remember reading that Nirvana's Unplugged album was one of the band's best selling recordings. Acoustical tracks aren't all I want to hear, but I do enjoy the occasional vocal and guitar alone and it certainly can make the songs have a more powerful impact.

As promised here is a link to Modcast #253: East Meets West with the Shibuya-kei Soul Sound

Modcast #301: Let's Go To The Beach

In the summer of 1982 I met my first real bonafide mods -- surfers every one of them. They were from Huntington Beach and during the day dressed like most surf kids, long board shorts and maybe a shirt. In the evenings and on weekends though they were decked out in much finer attire like three-button suits, Fred Perry polos, paisley shirts, pegged pants and pork pie hats. They were just a bit older, seemed much cooler, and certainly dated more girls than I did. I was smitten by the whole look and style. Ever since then I've had a soft spot for sun, sand and surf.

So, it's finally time to the shoot the curl with modcast #301. I'm serving up a whole slew of surf related sounds this week to kick off summer here in Seattle, and also to kick off the 9th season of Mr. Suave's Mod Mod World.

Modcast #300: The Brill Building Sound (RIP Gerry Goffin)

modcast 300 the brill building sound
[Update 6-19-14] Just heard the sad news that one of the Brill Building's greats has passed away. According to The AP: "Gerry Goffin, a prolific and multi-dimensional lyricist who with his then-wife and songwriting partner Carole King wrote such hits as "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," ''(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," ''Up on the Roof" and "The Loco-Motion," died early Thursday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 75."

It's been eight crazy years I've been producing the modcasts. When I started the show was pretty basic and the focus was on the music. The show is still pretty basic and the focus is still on the music. It seemed fitting to celebrate the eighth anniversary with a stroll through a musical treasure trove. The Brill Building.

Listen Now

The Brill building is a big old art-deco thing that has one of the greatest music stories you could imagine. From the 1930s on the Brill Building has been at the center of American music; home to producers, writers, publishers, and musicians who all work and collaborate together.

“Expressing the optimism and outrage of the early civil rights movement, [the Brill Building catalog] amalgamated black, white, and Latino sounds before multiculturalism became a concept, much less a cliché, and integrated audiences before America desegregated its schools. It helped create a youth market – teenagers were a new breed of human being and a brand-new consumer category – and trafficked in teen idols from whom Justin Timberlake and the Simpson sisters directly descend.” -- Ken Emerson, Always Magic In The Air: The Bomp And Brilliance Of The Brill Building Era

The Brill launched the careers of the likes of Burt Bacharach, Paul Simon, Sonny Bono, Carol King, Neil Diamond, Paul Anka and many more. The Brill sound was made famous by Dionne Warwick, Lesley Gore, The Monkees, Frank Sinatra, Sonny & Cher, and many more. So, it seemed like as good a time as any to finally pay tribute to the Brill Building Sound.

From The Vaults: Modcast #164 Mod Men

Welcome to Mr. Suave's Mod Mod World. This week's show is brought to you by the letter Y as in Y chromosome. It's mod men week on the modcast. I've collected songs from mod men, some with undeniable mod street cred like Ray Davies, Steve Marriot, or Paul Weller, and to others like Mose Allison and Paul Heaton who I will go to my grave arguing are every bit the mod as any other man. Regardless of all that, you can't argue with the songs. It's another great mix, if I do say so myself.

It was hard to put together the list, partly because what I really wanted were established artists who were now doing solo work. It was easy for some of them. Then there were others, like Steve Marriot who I really wanted to put in the show, that I had to dig deep and still found them in a band situation, or guys like Mose Allison who have essentially been solo artists for their entire careers, I included them anyhow.

Mose Allison -- Seventh Son (1962)
David Bowie -- Love You Till Tuesday (1967)

Modcast #298: Flashback to '94

Just like some girls' mothers, some years are bigger than other years. One of the great mod friendly years in musical history happens to be back 20 years ago, Before the internet, before MP3s became ubiquitous, back to when vinyl was still dead, CDs ruled the musical universe. Before ipads, pods or phones. Hell John Major was still in 10 Downing street and things were just about to really get wild. 1994 brought us lounge music, pop punk, Britpop, and acid jazz. Now I'm bringing 1994 to you.

Modcast #296: The Swingin' Sound of Carnaby Street

Carnaby Street in the 1960s was the fashion, style and musical center of the universe; and where mod made its most artistic impact. The bands of the British invasion were the kings of Carnaby Street, The Who, The Beatles, The Kinks, Small Faces, all of them were there. You know all of them. But there was another similar sound.
It was the swinging sound of sixties London. It spawned an entire style of music that was easy listening, soulful, swinging, jazzy, cinematic; in short lounge music for lack of another genre moniker. That Carnaby sound was the inspiration for this week's show. I hope you're feeling groovy, baby.

Modcast #295: Singing About The Ladies

It's all about the ladies this week in the mod world. I mean, it's always all about the ladies in my world, except when it's all about the cocktails. I was about half way through putting the show together when I realized all the songs had one thing in common. They all had a woman's name in the title. So, I figured what the hell it's as good a theme as any and I rounded out the set list with more songs about girls. Pretty good mix too, if I do say so myself.

Got a big show for you this week. And I do mean big. Big and loud. And fast. And rockin'. I just returned from a bit of R&R south of the equator. It did serve to recharge my internal battery and I'm hoping to deliver that they same sort of recharge to all of my dear listeners.

Modcast #291: Sounds of Studio 66

All is right with the world this week. My Seattle Seahawks simply crushed the Denver Broncos in Superbowl 48, so I haven't really had time to do up a right proper show. What I do have for you is an hour of mod power, featuring the sounds of Studio 66. Studio 66 is a quarterly mod night held here in Seattle that I've had the fun privilege to DJ at a couple of times, one of which was last weekend on Superbowl eve. This is the opening set I played to get it all got kicked off. I'll be posting some of my other sets from that evening later, so keep an eye out for those.

Modcast #290: Viva Bossa Nova!

This week, I'm gettin' all easy up in the suave lounge and delivering you a whole show of Bossa Nova. Bossa Nova became an American, and international really, music staple in the 60s, and it is still immensely popular. For this week's show I'm gonna take you through some stuff that should be in every mods catalog as we celebrate that South American sensation, Bossa Nova. Most everyone is familiar with the most popular of Bossa Nova tracks like The Girl From Ipanema, So Nice, and Bim Bom. What I'm hoping to do is dig a little deeper and share some lesser known tracks, as well as a few more recognizable songs.

From The Vaults: Modcast #198 Spring Into Action

Once more into the vault my friends, once more into the vault. Step back in time, to a time when the modcast was young and fresh. Take a giant step outside your current listening constraints and journey with me all the way back to 2011. I've opened up the vaults and dusted off a classic modcast that I think you'll enjoy. Again.

Welcome to Mr. Suave's Mod Mod World. Spring is in the air, except in Seattle sadly. In the United States, spring means baseball. Contrary to popular belief, Seattle does have a professional baseball team. The Mariners. And the Mariners have Ichiro, undeniably one of the world's biggest and best baseball stars. So, fittingly I've included a track from The Baseball Project's latest album, "Ichiro Goes To The Moon".

Lots more cool stuff on this week's show. And, here's a bit of news. This will be the first modcast of Mr. Suave's Mod Mod World to be carried on Mod Radio UK. I'm happy to be joining the ranks of some very cool people producing some of the best shows and playing some of the best musuc out there.
