Modcast #289: Mr. Suave's Best of 2013

I've collected here some of the songs from some of my favorite artists and albums from the past year. Give it a listen, I think you'll agree that 2013 was pretty good, musically speaking.

Modcast #286: The Mod's Mod -- Burt Bacharach

[Update 2.09.23] I just don't know what to do with myself. The mod's mod, Burt Bacharach, has walked on by. RIP]

Listen now
Download

This week's show is a tribute to a man I consider as mod a composer, as mod a musician, as mod a man, as any mod out there. Mr. Burt Bacharach.

Ever since his first chart hit --written for Nat King Cole in 1952-- Burt Bacharach has written music that swings with soul. He wrote a number of hits for northern soul singers like Jerry Butler as well as groundbreaking chart toppers like The Shirelles (arguably the first all-girl soul group to top the chart) not to mention sixties superstars like Dusty Springfield, Dionne Warwick and Sergio Mendes.

Bacharach has done it all. He's got grammys, emmys, and oscars. He's dated supermodels, hung with the rat pack, and even gave the Beatles a run for their chart supremacy. And then, somehow became the poster boy for easy listening as the king of lounge music during the cocktail music revival of the 90s.

The Five Blobs -- The Blob (1958)
Jerry Butler -- Make It Easy On Yourself (1962)
Dionne Warwick -- Anyone Who Had A Heart (1964)
The Shirelles -- Baby It's You (1961)
Paul Weller -- Close To You (2004)
Noel Gallagher-- This Guy's In Love With You (1996)
Shonen Knife -- Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head (1998)
Naked Eyes -- Always Something There To Remind Me (1983)
The White Stripes -- I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself (2002)

Modcast #285: It's Alive!

There is something about a live show, about hearing a band perform live, that just can't be beat. It is hard to capture the same energy with a studio recording. It is also hard to record any live show and get the same sort of feeling. But, I've got some pretty good live tracks for you that will give you a sense of how that band would sound live and loud in the flesh. From the sixties icons like The Stones and Georgie Fame to acid jazzers Corduroy to punks like Social Distortion, I've put together 15 live tracks for this week's modcast.

From The Vaults: Modcast #200 5th Anniversary Special

Once more into the vault my friends, once more into the vault. Step back in time, to a time when the modcast was young and fresh. Take a giant step outside your current listening constraints and journey with me all the way back to 2010. I've opened up the vaults and dusted off a classic modcast that I think you'll enjoy. Again.

Welcome to the 200th modcast of Mr. Suave's Mod Mod World. And, this is the 5th anniversary of the modcast. That's right we've all survived 199 modcasts. When this show started Osama really was living in a cave, no one outside of chicago had ever heard of Obama. My how things have changed.

I started this modcast in part because it seemed to me that a lot of great mod bands from the original Southern California scene of the 80s never got their due. My first few shows were dedicated to sharing the music of some great 80s mod bands and then it just sort of grew from there. Here we are a couple hundred shows later, and I still feel like some great bands are just lost in the mix. So, I'm circling right back to where it all started.

Joining me this week is my long-time compadre Ken who survived all those early days in the scene along with me a few other concert-tested veterans. We've each picked out some key songs from the likes of The Question, Manual Scan, The Three O'Clock, The Modsters and more. Enjoy, and for my tenth anniversary I promise something more contemporary. See you then.

Modcast #281: I Wanna Be Your Dancemaster

I'm a rug cutter from way back. I can't help but get up and dance when a good song starts spinning. So, this week I'm sharing a bunch of toe tappers, floor scorchers and blistering dance tracks. These are some of my favorite songs to dance to. I mean if I had a sprained ankle, a fractured leg and a broken pelvis and one of these songs started playing, I would have to painfully drag myself out onto the dance floor and start struttin' my stuff. So, get out the talcum mods, and put on your dancing shoes and get to shuf-shuf-shuffling.

Covers, covers, and more covers. Just the thing for a dark and stormy night, or for any old time really. Mr. Suave here, guiding you through the dark, dreary world with little beacons of musical light. Those beacons are ones you've probably heard before. That's right it's another show of all covers. I've the good, the bad, the tributes, the not-so-tributes, and everything else. You know the songs, but you might be surprised at some of the artists. And, this time around you'll get to hear them interpreted in some new ... and uh, ... shall we say, ... interesting ways.

How many songs about cops or crime are there? Well dozens, if you're just listening to The Clash. This week's modcast is all about crime and punishment, the cops and the criminals. First things first, quick shout out and thank you to the Ice Cream Man for hosting last week's show, and it was a pretty damn good show. He was fresh off the debut of his own power pop podcast which you can check out at his very excellent blog at icecreamman1967.blogspot.com.

Modcast #156: Play That Song

Listen now

Welcome to Mr. Suave's Mod Mod World, modcast #156. In honor of Valentine's Day I've done nothing. Nothing for Valentine, but everything for you dear listener -- and it's a much better story.

I've got a couple of brand new tracks from The Eddies and the Len Price 3. The Eddies are twins Dean and Dale Hoth backed up by legendary producer Earl Mankey on the drums. (If you don't know, Mankey was an original member of Sparks when they started out and later became a producer in the LA undergrounds for The Quick, The Last, Three O'Clock, Long Ryders, Leaving Trains and more.) Their new song shows off Mankey's producing with lots of cool sound affects throughout. The Len Price 3's latest album dropped last month to rave reviews, and you won't get any argument from me. They've outdone themselves again. In addition there are a few supercool, superhero number and some sixties stuff. Nothing not to like here.

The Eddies -- I Want You and I Want You (2010)

Modcast #274: Everybody's Going To The Love-In

Not sure how it happened, it just did. This week's modcast has a decidedly garage rock feel to it. In putting the show together these songs just seemed to work. So, you get a little power pop, some new garagish songs, and a little bit of soul. What's not to like about that?

From The Vaults: Modcast #178 Featuring Keith Slettedahl lead singer of The 88

Once more into the vault my friends, once more into the vault. Step back in time, to a time when the modcast was young and fresh. Take a giant step outside your current listening constraints and journey with me all the way back to Fall 2010. I've opened up the vaults and dusted off a classic modcast that I think you'll enjoy. Again.

Welcome to Mr. Suave's Mod Mod World. This week the mod world is full of wonderfully pure pop music. What a show, what a show, what a show. From new to old, from The 88 to Manual Scan to the Small Faces, the whole show is packed with great music.

And a great interview with The 88's own front man, Keith Slettedahl who is the band's lead singer and main songwriter. If you're not familiar with The 88 you should be. They are a great power pop band that is carving out a really nice original sound for themselves. Rather than be just a derivative sort of soundalike band, they've incorporated influences from a lot of classic sixties bands like The Kinks, The Beatles, and The Zombies into a very modern, very original, pop sound that is all their own. You might also know them from the movie and TV work they've done, including recording the theme song to NBC's the Community. I've got some of their older stuff, as well as a taste of their brand new album appropriately titled The 88 which officially comes out next Tuesday, Sept. 28, but is already available through iTunes. Pick it up, you won't be disappointed.

The interview comes in two parts. In part one we talk about The 88's work this past year as the backing band for mod legend Ray Davies, how they write their songs and the sound of their new album. In the second half you'll find out how the band knows Danny Benair of Three O'Clock fame, some of Keith's other musical influences and what they're up to next.

Rounding it all out I've got a track that Bart Mendoza from Manual Scan sent me special for the show, a rare live track of Manual Scan backing up Squire's Anthony Meynell in 1985. If you missed my interview with Bart head on over to mistersuave.com and look up modcast #177.

Modcast #273: Instant Action

Welcome to the real world people. This week's show is full of instant action, and is what's real for mods in the world today. And yesterday. And maybe tomorrow.

Speaking of yesterday, today and tomorrow, I've been ruminating of late about what are my top ten favorite songs. Turns out it's rather hard to do. Should I pick my absolute single favorite song in each of ten different genres? Or top ten songs in specific genres? But I'd be curious to know your thoughts about how one can go about picking out their top ten favorite songs. All time? All genres? One genre? Bands only? Solo artists? By decade perhaps? Leave me your thoughts below, or head on over to the modcast Facebook page at facebook.com/modmodworld and let me know what you think.

The mod world is busier than a fly at a crap convention this week. So, I picked out songs that for the most part need no introduction, by artists that you are all well familiar with. Then I just get out of the way and let the music testify. The verdict? Guilty of greatness I'm sure.

Welcome to Mr. Suave's Mod Mod World, it's time to get some summertime booze. At last, at long last, summer has come to seattle. This has been one of the coldest springs on record in the northwest, but the times they are a changin'. The thermometer has actually eeked up over 80 degrees fahrenheit. Not exactly Vegas temps sure, but I'll take it.

This week you're going to get a full dose of sunny, hot, summer songs.
But don't blame me, it's not my fault. Give credit where credit is due right, so I have to give credit and a shout out to one of the best blogs on the net Music Ruined My Life. If you dig power pop, punk, pop-punk, mod, new wave and so on then Music Ruined My Life should be one of the blogs you follow. Jeffen the man behind the blog recently did a great post featuring summer songs -- which got me to thinking. I started putting together a list in my mind and voila here's the modcast to prove it.

Modcast #270: A Musical Tour of the 60s

On this week's modcast I'm bringing you some wonderful music from that decade of decades, the 1960s. The sixties got stuck in my craw early on, when I was just a young'un. For some reason from a very early age I just really liked all sorts of sixties stuff -- movies, tv, music, fashion. It was only natural that when I got to be a teen that I would get sucked into the mod scene with it's love of all things sixties. Recently I was talking to a friend about Mad Men about how many changes the decade went through. Thanks to watching Mad Men we realized how everything duuring the sixties seemed to radically change every few years. Just look at the difference between music in 1960 and music in 1970. So this week I'm taking you on a year by year trip through the decade highlighting some great songs, one per year, with a few bonus songs to wrap up the hour.

Modcast #40: Take a Look at The Young Idea

At long last, the much anticipated Squire tribute album has arrived. And it's worth the wait. Seventeen fantastic Squire songs covered by a whole slew of various mod and power pop bands like The Shambles, the Little Murders, Paul Bevoir, Mega Super Ultra, Jeremy and Mod Fun. Squire epitomized the pop side of mod during the revival of the late 70s and early 80s. They were at the forefront of the scene the entire time, and later helped revitalize the American mod scene by appearances in the states --especially in California-- throughout the late 80s. Now we have The Young Idea A Pop Tribute to Anthony Meynell and Squire. I'm previewing a couple of tracks for you all on today's show. You can pickup your copy over at the Jam Records website.
  • Squire -- Take a Look
  • The Eddies -- Debbie Jones
  • The Shingles -- Girl on a Train
  • The Blocked -- Plastic Punks
  • Mother Earth -- Very Together
  • Three 0'Clock -- I Go Wild
  • Mary's Danish -- Yellow Creep Around
  • Leaving Trains -- Cigarette Motel
  • The Canary Sect -- See Me In Action
  • Code Blue -- Modern Times
  • Bim Skala Bim -- Talk Talk and Talk

Bim Skala Bim - Solitary Confinement (1985)

Bim Skala Bim - Skeleton (1995)

Modcast #45: See the Light

This week's modcast has some good stuff. There's a good dose of power pop as usual. But, there's a nice little trio of 80s synthesizer infused, soul influenced modpop as well. I think you'll find a striking similarity between Mood Six and The Truth, both sounding like precursors to later groups such as Swing Out Sister or the Orange Peels.
