Modcast #261: Near Misses

This week's show is called Near Misses. Each track here was previously considered for inclusion in a past show, but for whatever reason ended up not making the cut. Not because they're not good songs, but because I chose a different song by the band, or maybe ran out of time in the show, or something like that. At any rate, here then are a whole slew of almost made it tracks, that are getting a second shot at starring in the big show.

Modcast #260: Keepin' The Faith

Soul music really is the soul of mod. Since the 60s mods have had a love affair with soul music. It's amazing how big (and sometimes surprisingly subtle) an influence soul has been to music overall. Too many songs are really just soul songs gussied up in another genre whether it be garage, or lounge, or sophistopop or whatever. So, this week I'm taking you all out for a serious soul fling. Put your dancing shoes on, and get ready to get down.

Modcast #92: We Must All Be Mad

Got some new stuff to share this week, including the brand new single from Paul Weller, joined by Noel Gallagher, called Echoes Around the Sun. It's a psych rocker, lots of fuzziness, lots of noise, but eventually it evens out. Weller's never shied away from production values, but this one might be a bit overdone for my taste. Still, amongst all the noise and atmosphere there are some good hooks. His full album is due out in June, so you've got that to look forward.

The rest of the show is just as strong with new stuff from the Stabilisers and tracks from the A-Lines, The Ammonites, John Mayall, Ian McClagan and Etta James just to name a few. Enjoy.

  • Paul Weller (Ft. Noel Gallagher) -- Echoes Around The Sun
  • The A-Lines -- One Day
  • The Kooks -- Eddie's Gun
  • The Stabilisers -- Wanna
  • Wood & The Splinters -- I Must Be Mad
  • Ammonites -- Blue Lagoon
  • The Chefs -- I'll Go Too
  • Etta James -- Seven Day Fool
  • John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers -- Looking Back
  • Ian McLagan & The Bump Band -- Little Girl
  • The White Stripes -- The Denial Twist

    Bonus Video
    The Stablisers - Belinda

Modcast #58: The Warmth of The Sun

This is The Warmth of the Sun, the second in a special two-part ode to the start of summer and really just an excuse to enjoy some more infectious pop music. The sounds here within are all reminiscent of Bacharach, the Beach Boys and even the Beatles. For this show I've got a bunch of great pop songs that will put you in mind of girl groups with a nod to the sixties, some power pop strumming and all smartly done with catchy pop hooks, harmonies and melodies. What could be more welcoming to summer than this?
    • Birdie -- Laugh
    • The Pipettes -- The Burning Ambition Of The Early Diuretics
    • The Dynette Set -- Seed of Love
    • The Carrots -- Secret Since '99
    • Couple -- Gotta Be My Girl
    • The Boy Least Likely To -- Be Gentle With Me
    • Acid House Kings -- Tonight is Forever
    • The Jigsaw Seen -- Jim is the Devil
    • Fiery Furnaces -- Here Comes The Summer
    • The Lodger -- My Advice is on Loan
    • Wolfie -- Hey It's Finally Yay
The Lodger -- I love Death
