Modcast #377: The People Who Died

If ever a year demanded a wake it's 2016. Have we ever felt more deeply the loss of so many cultural icons from Muhammad Ali to George Michael (hey I still love Wham's first album, so there!), Garry Shandling to Garry Marshall. It was just a shitty year for the touchstones of Gen X, the people we grew up with. The defacto mom who raised us, Florence Henderson, to the defacto royalty, Princess Leia, who was a role model to even us boys. So many writers, actors, singers and storytellers, too many to count and seemingly more than most other years for some reason.

So, here's the wake, my and Mary Queen of Cosmos take on celebrating the end of the year, wherein we play a few songs, raise a few drinks, and remember all of those who now leave us only with those memories.

First rule of 2017? Don't talk about 2016.

Mary Queen of Cosmos recommends some additional reading/listening:
  • I'm Afraid of Americans -- by Thurston Moore on performing with David Bowie

  • GuyClark -- The songwriter's songwriter, Texas-born. A master story-teller. Hard-living, hard-loving, hard-working, he died in May at the age of 74. Rolling Stone beautifully eulogizes him much more eloquently than I ever could.

  • Sharon Jones on NPR:
