From the Vaults: Modcasts #40 & # 45

Once more into the vault my friends, once more into the vault. Step back in time, to a time when the modcast was young and fresh. Take a giant step outside your current listening constraints and journey with me all the way back to those oh so sweltering days of Summer 2007. I've opened up the vaults and dusted off a couple classic modcasts that I think you'll enjoy. Again.

Modcast #40: Take a Look at The Young Idea

At long last, the much anticipated Squire tribute album has arrived. And it's worth the wait. Seventeen fantastic Squire songs covered by a whole slew of various mod and power pop bands like The Shambles, the Little Murders, Paul Bevoir, Mega Super Ultra, Jeremy and Mod Fun. Squire epitomized the pop side of mod during the revival of the late 70s and early 80s. They were at the forefront of the scene the entire time, and later helped revitalize the American mod scene by appearances in the states --especially in California-- throughout the late 80s. Now we have The Young Idea A Pop Tribute to Anthony Meynell and Squire. I'm previewing a couple of tracks for you all on today's show. You can pickup your copy over at the Jam Records website.
  • Squire -- Take a Look
  • The Eddies -- Debbie Jones
  • The Shingles -- Girl on a Train
  • The Blocked -- Plastic Punks
  • Mother Earth -- Very Together
  • Three 0'Clock -- I Go Wild
  • Mary's Danish -- Yellow Creep Around
  • Leaving Trains -- Cigarette Motel
  • The Canary Sect -- See Me In Action
  • Code Blue -- Modern Times
  • Bim Skala Bim -- Talk Talk and Talk

Bim Skala Bim - Solitary Confinement (1985)

Bim Skala Bim - Skeleton (1995)

Modcast #45: See the Light

This week's modcast has some good stuff. There's a good dose of power pop as usual. But, there's a nice little trio of 80s synthesizer infused, soul influenced modpop as well. I think you'll find a striking similarity between Mood Six and The Truth, both sounding like precursors to later groups such as Swing Out Sister or the Orange Peels.

Modcast #266: Get Ready To Rumble

Another week, another great modcast coming your way. I'm, kicking off the show with an American 60s band that sounds almost more mod than the British mods of their day. The band is Powder and I included them this week in part because this coming Saturday I'm going to get to meet them when they play at the Studio 66 mod night at the LoFi Performance Gallery here in Seattle, and lucky me I'm going to be the guest DJ.

Another thing that is making this week's show especially good is that I'm joined by my old friend Dean Hoth who is the singer and bass player for power pop band The Eddies. Additionally Dean has been a behind the scenes mover and shaker in producing some great tribute albums, and is also working on releasing unheard live materials of older mod bands from the 80s to the 90s to the 21st century. Such as The Shambles. He's got some news for mod music lovers.

Modcast #265: Doin' The iMod Shuffle III

This is the modern world. So proclaimed The Jam back in 1977. But how much more modern is the world today, as it is complete with iPods and mp3 players and more portable music than you can shake a tailfeather at?

When I first got into the mod scene portable music was a cassette tape played on a three pound Walkmen. Cassettes typically held a dozen songs, maybe 18-20 if you made a Ramones mixtape. But that was the best you could do if you wanted your music to go mobile.

Well, this indeed is the modern world. Now I have an iPod that has upwards of 6,000 songs on it, a phone that has a couple thousand more, and a laptop with a digital catalog of just over 30,000 songs. And in this digital musical dream world I have become a slave to shuffle.

So this week I'm bringing back the iMod shuffle. The whole show was picked out by my iPod's shuffle. This installment of the iMod shuffle is the result of a recent trip to the dog park with Kali Shiva and Dick Gibson (she's a goddess, and he's a dick). Anyhow, this modcast mix really did come up in exactly this order. That's the only rule for the iMod shuffle, I play it as it came up on the iPod -- these exact songs in exactly this order, no substitutions.

Have fun Doin' the iMod Shuffle.

Modcast #263: Made in America, Mod in the USA

Made in the USA is a tag that means something over here. Sort of. At least it means it wasn't tiny-hand crafted by children in a third-world sweatshop. Supposedly. But, I digress. The point today is that made in the USA means mod in the USA.

Listen Now

Worldwide, the modness out there is almost palpable. Spain. France. Russia. The Netherlands. Philippines. Is there anywhere a mod band won't pop up these days? Short answer is no.

From the four corners of the earth we've got slick dressed chicks and dandified dudes. And all of them are backed up by a lot of sixties inspired, soul infused, garage rockin', freakbeat driving, pogoing powerpop, music. And hey guess what: I ain't talkin' about Britain. This is America, we're having our own little mod revival going right here in these good ol' United States

That right, this week's show is all Mod in the USA. All American bands representing different approaches to the mod scene -- soul bands, power pop bands, garage rock acts, I've got it all covered for you.
